Welcome welcome my beloved Tributes. We are officially at the halfway point and I am so proud of each and every one of you. If you are discouraged just remember that you have made it this far, so there is no reason to believe you cannot make it the rest of the way. Now for this next challenge you are in for a treat, as it will test your ability to collaborate without being fully able to communicate. In the thick of the Arena you may have to make fast friends of convenience, and you will not be able to properly strategize in the heat of the moment.
This challenge is called "Chain Reaction." You and your partner will be given a list of words to connect. You will, in alternating turns, come up with the next word in the chain. These words can be common phrases, people's names, brands, and so on. Be prepared for anything and everything!
So for example if Seneca and I were playing, we might have this list:
First Word: CHEESE
Second Word: W
Third Word: K
Fourth Word: R
Last Word: BAND
The we would go as follows:
Effie: Cheese Whiz
Seneca: Whiz Kid
Effie: Kid Rock
Seneca: Rock Band
See? It is not that difficult! You may strategize beforehand on what you will do, but during the game you will not be permitted to communicate (except about whose turn it is). This is about performance under pressure. A few rules:
1) This challenge will take place via a chatroom on chatzy.com. Inform the mods of your start time so that we ensure a proctor is available to host the challenge for you. A mod will provide the link to your District's chatroom shortly before your start time. WARNING: Before hitting "Join Room" when you get your chatzy link, ensure that you use your Hybrid Name and not a past name you've used.
2) A supplementary google doc will be provided with the chains themselves once we are set up in the chatzy. Please be sure to open this in an incognito tab.
3) The first Tribute will say the first word of the chain you are attempting, and the word you believe is next after. For instance I would say "Cheese Whiz."
4) The second Tribute may then either quote the chain and post the next word after, or post the previous word along with the next one. Seneca would either quote "Cheese Whiz" and add "Kid" after, or just post "Whiz Kid."
5) If you post an incorrect guess, we will give you another letter in the next word. If I guessed "Whiz Kiss," then I would be told "Incorrect." Another letter would also be revealed on a corresponding google doc you will be provided, for example "WHIZ KI ." This will happen until you arrive at the last letter, after which you will not be given any further letters. If I guessed "Whiz Kill," I would again be told "Incorrect, no new letters." The google doc would still state "WHIZ KI". This indicates that there is only one letter left in the word. All chains & revealed letters will be in ALL CAPS.
6) You will do the chains in the order they appear on the google doc.
7) You may only guess from top to bottom. You may not guess out of order.
8) If you complete a chain, the other Tribute in your pair will immediately begin the next chain.9) The team with the most completed chains after 1 hour will win.
10) If there is a tie, the team with the lower number of guesses to complete will win. If there is a tie after that, the team who completed their chains more quickly will win.
11) You are not allowed to communicate with one another except to remind your partner it's their turn once the challenge begins.
12) Your guess must be exactly correct. "Whiz Kids" would not count for "Whiz Kid."
13) No two word phrase will appear multiple times in any one chain. For example, Cheese Whiz will not appear again, though Cheese or Whiz may.
14) All words/phrases will be in US terms (e.g. if you are used to saying colour, this challenge will use color instead).
15) FAILURE TO POST THE CHAIN IN THE WAYS MENTIONED ABOVE (such as "accidentally" posting the whole chain at once) MAY RESULT IN THE LOSS OF A COMPLETED CHAIN.
The use of outside resources WILL be permitted during this challenge.
